Black Friday

So being broke this year didn't mean not getting a new gadget, as @Amazon has a promotion running today on cell phones. I got a brand new BlackBerry Storm2 9550 top of the line model for $0.99! That's less than a buck, plus NO sales tax! IF you were to (and you cant) find a deal like this at a retail store (the lowest I've found is $179.99) you still have to pay sales tax, which is a hefty number in Los Angeles, racking up at about 10% depending which city in the County you live in. This truly is the best bargain in cell phones Ive come across in a long time and they have other offers available. I will miss Sprint, but @Palms lack of build quality and lackadaisical responses to major issues plaguing the Pre & Pixis are just too much. The FINAL straw in my cell phone camels back follows: I arrived at my best friends house for Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday at 1:30PM & my @Palm #Pre battery which was FULLY charged was EMPTY by 6:30PM after taking a couple of pics, tweeting and showing my phone to a friend. Un-Frakking acceptable for a smart phone which I paid $200 for plus accessories. This phone STILL cant record video, doesn't have auto focus for the camera, has ZERO quality games and social media apps. Your loss @Palm. I'm happy to pay more for excellent service with @VZWOffers and get kick ass reliable service, high speeds, great build quality and access to hundreds of applications that I can truly use for my lifestyle.

I will update with an unboxing and a review of my phone (which is mine, not a PR unit)

JD Power Awards (Mobile)

From JD Power & Associates, the latest call quality surveys are in for the first part of 2009 and they do not bring Sprint-Nextel any good news. In fact, one wonders what the hell Sprint is even doing with Nextel, let alone its Wi-MAX division!

A truly heartfelt, honest article about Gen Ys plight

My friend Neha Tiwari wrote this article that really hit home with me, NOW as Im so fond of saying. A quick primer before you hit the link for the jump, the article discusses the emotional ramifications of being unemployed for 12 consecutive months, while being smart, having a kick ass resume (Which I don't), being in the top of your field and smarter than the 'average bear'.

Ill be 34 in Three weeks and I have never personally been so unsure of my own future as I feel NOW. It will be one full year since I was fired from BMW next month and you would have thought, in this time, I would have figured out something that works for me monetarily, but not yet. I know my future lays in Technology, I know thats what Im great at as well as sales skills, but my query is; how do I put it all together?

http://nehatiwari.com/2009/08/13/mid-level-mid-twenties-extinction/

Thanks for all of your continued support and lets hope I have what it takes to make it to the next level. Also, please comment on Nehas blog, she reads all of her comments!

What if loggers ran the world, NOW?

Hot on the heels of Sprint Nextel's Wi-MAX 4G expansion announcements today, they launched another commercial in their dual disparate TV ad campaign's. Why they continue to promote iDen while its a dead technology, I have no clue (this too, will be in my forthcoming article & essay) but non-the-less I understand the need to continue to promote the Nextel name and value proposition.

Carrier Wars: the Sprint Now Network

The Boy Genius Report has been doing something NO ONE else has and that's pool independent data from all across the U.S. from its member base and actually (gasp) independently audit 3G download speeds. Well, the result's are in kids and they will probably shock most 'pro-sumers'. The Now Network beat out ALL competition for having the United States of Americas fastest 3G network by AN AVERAGE of 433kbps for an AVERAGE download speed of 1361kbps!

Of course, as many of you know, I am writing an article on the State of Wireless: 3G & 4G and this story will have some relevant information to contribute that further backs up what I have uncovered thus far in my investigation.

Tweet, NOW on Sprint Speed!

I came across Sprints new vanity wireless 4G MVNO homepage today & it features the cute little Tweet Bird from the cool 'Now Network' commercials! I think its neat that Sprint was the first carrier to embrace Twitter and along with Buzz About Wireless engage in open, positive dialogue with its community and clients. Also, again, Sprint is the only carrier in the United States to offer a "TAKE BACK THE BEEP" program.

So, enjoy the cute little Twitter Bird, share some Tweets and check out the cool video describing the new 4G service.

I am working on a an Editorial on the State of Wireless, what real world speeds are for all four carriers and good, sound data (with fancy graphs) to show it all off. To this day, no one has written a fully factual article on the Wireless Industry and I am going to. It will be biased, it will be opinionated and it will all be factual and layed out clearly. I am not on any ones payroll and I have no sponsors, so I feel I can really shake things up a tad with this.

Thoughts, feedback, suggestions? I would love to incorporate them into the piece!

Sprint Palm Pre

So, in response to a poll on Engagdet (who has overtaken Gizmodo as the BETTER, more news worthy blog) I authored this quick and dirty mini review that follows.

Ive been using my Sprint Palm Pre for about two weeks now and am torn between keeping it, or swapping it out for the Sprint RIM Tour. According to @boygenius who is the only one to compare and review both so far, the Tours build quality is much better in addition to the reception being 2X better! As you may have guessed, those are the top to complaints of my Pre. Here is a list of my Pros & Cons:

CONS: Cheap feeling, screens a bit 'wobbily', Matte Battery cover should be standard as poster above notated. Reception is only average for voice, Data always seems to get a signal and is very quick. Also that stupid button at the bottom is useless and they could do more with the gesture area. I mean, if the whole screen is a gesture area, whats the point of a second one? No expandable memory is inexscuseable in 2009. almost 2010. There is NO reason they could not have put that in, especially where the SIM slot will go in the WCDMA version. Also, no voice recognition for a phone that Multi-Tasks? Again, NO reason, its standard on FREE Sanyos & LGs people. Other stuff Ill let slide because its a 1.0 release.

PROS: I really like the multi touch screen, it seems to be nicer and clearer than the iPhone. Also, its very fast in certain apps (like web browsing) vs. my old iPhone 3G. I like the keyboard a lot, i thinks its perfect. It would be nice to have an on screen one via landscape a la G1. Also, the few apps that are available are very well done and don't all have the SAME gay interface as the iPhone apps. Also, my coverage is much better with Sprint than AT&T, I rarely drop calls. Im also considering getting a femtocell for home which AT&T does not offer. Also, my bill went from $140 to $80. Thats some real change. Finally, webOS is nice, I would even say nicer than Windows Mobile 6.1 or OSX.

The Tour, having the same GPS system, voice recognition and more apps is VERY tempting, but I also know that BB OS 5.0 is basically a cute theme and its apps are very limited in size, in addition to the sub par browsing experience on RIM devices. In the end, I may just wind up sticking it out for a year with Pre version One and hoping part Two will be even better.

Transformers II OST releases tonight!

I am so pleased that Steve Jablonsky is back composing the new Transformers film. Mr. Jablonsky is truly the 'new' Jerry Goldsmith and his music is very empowering. Kudos to Michael Bay for bringing him back, I know Paramount did not wish to pay.

So, those with 6Mbps, which is the standard, are passed over? Oh yeah, SONY you are fu-cked.

Zune HD, Bing & Project Pink

So, word is the new ZUNE HD is hitting shelves on September 5th placing it in direct competition with Apples newly refreshed iPod Nano line as well as the continuing carryover of the Touch 2G.

I wonder if we all got it wrong and PINK was the codename for the new ZUNE platform (hardware & software) and not a smartphone?

BREAKING: EGM returns...

From the grave that the piece of shit sell-out assholes at Ziff-Davis / Hearst made the BEST video-game rag go prematurely into. The founder is back, taking control as Publisher (Steve Harris) and we can only hope one Mr. Ed Semrad brings back the joy-gasms. I want NO part of the ludicrous bullshit fanboism that 1up.com was and is and the 'revamp' that they made EGM become. I will never, EVER forgive them for changing the most sacred and honored tradition in all of Video Gaming, the Rating System and throwing it literally out the window, because they called Assassin's Creed crappy. Umm, its an Activision game on multi console. Of course it fucking sucks.

Dont go broke on music!

This is AWESOME! Go Microsoft, Go! Now, whats funny is, I use MSFT everything except when it comes to ZUNE. And it gets even weirder, check it: ZUNE software makes iTunes look like child play.
But yet I use iTunes. Why? Partly because I have an iPhone and syncing is super easy, but mostly the breadth of content that Apple has secured it staggering compared to MSFT in terms of Video (TV, Movies, Rental & HD). Now, do I buy ALL my music on iTunes? Hell no, I use AmazonMP3 quite often and they generally have WAY better deals!

Moral of the short story? Microsoft, wheres code-name 'Pink' at and the ZUNE phone?

Verizon Wireless has just lowered its price for the Samsung Omnia down to $99.99 with NO rebates required! Now, I'm a huge Death-Star fan, but this is a really cool device with lots of cool features' and if you are the least bit knowledgeable, you can delete the bloat ware right off this mother! AT&T, where the hell is OUR five-eight megapixel Smartphone with flash and onboard 8GBs of NAND goodness? Oh yeah, we only get the Fruit phone with its shitty camera and non video recording capabilities...

Windows 7 logo program, RC & drivers released

Microsoft has released via e-mail to Technet & MSDN members the Windows 7 RC that leaked on to torrent site nearly two weeks back, in what looks to be the exact same build. Some say this was a deliberate ploy by MSFT to not strain and wreck their servers, considering what happened with the end user experience for the Customer Beta Program.

Also, NvIDIA has released SIGNIFICANT driver updates that bring all new, modern G-Force cards up to DX 10.1 FULL compliance. Gizmodo has a great article written by Matt Buchanan detailing what these new APIs do and how the handles are managed by the system.

This is a great program offered by PALM, I think it shows that at least they are TRYING to outreach & market to the RIGHT crowd!
Are your Facebook updates all about your experience with your phone? Do you know what "FP" means? (And are your blog comments a bit more substantive than that?) If you can tweet your opinions about Palm phones in 140 characters or less, we want to hear from you. We're looking for a few "Real Reviewers" to share their opinions about Palm phones across the blogosphere, social networks and beyond.

OMG, OMG! This is SO neat!

This is a bit off-topic as this is not Tech related per se, but it is Dr. Seuss's Birthday today and Google did something very special on their home page in his honor.

I think we all owe a little something to this great man who has literally shaped and touched millions of children from around the world and inspired them in some small, or maybe large way.

Thinking of you @kalong, baby!

State of the Wireless Union

Since this has been a week of 'revelations' for so many varied, great things (the Obamanator's first big TV gig, 3GSM, new Banks going under, CA running out of water, new BSG, etc.) I thought it wonderfully appropriate that we check in with what is a major story, Wireless. Wireless in America and Europe really is one of the only FEW technology related industries thats continuing to forge ahead in the Financialcopolypse churning (pun intended!) out large size profits.

But wait, you exclaim! Mike, that cant be right, especially about the part involving America. Isnt Sprint, well, Fucked? No. And Yes is the answer and I know that kind of seems like a sell-out answer to a super relevant topic, post and question. But if you hang in here with me, youll see that really, its not.

State of the Wireless Union, America Style, Bitches...
Okay, as you can see by the epically stunning fantastic photo located to my above top right, there sits the only "4G" Wi-MAX card in California. Cool, right? I think so! Except for the you know, nagging details, like, umm... There is no Fraking 4G network in CA for it to run on. Timeframe? Lets just say, according to my source (full disclaimer: these are my opines only of what we had in a casual conversation and I can not, seriously, for her/his NDC overlords have direct quotes) you will be waiting until end of 2010, likely 2011! Now, for a company that has three or four different names and what amounts to what seems like the tail wagging the dog, this is not a good thing. Sprint PCS, neigh Sprint-Nextel, neigh the new SPRINT, neigh Sprint, neigh ZXOHM, neigh Clearwire, neigh Clear (like the steroids?) This company in my professional opinion is in very deep shit. They are hugely unprofitable and have a significant debt to income ratio along with accrued debt through various lame ass stupid fucking mergers that make no sense to the common man. And oh yeah, Dan Hessee: YOUR STUPID BLACK AND WHITE "VALUE" COMMERCIALS SUCK. It doesn't take Veronica Belmont in a segment with the under rated Patrick Norton on Texzilla to let you know that the value proposition being bandied about by Sprint is utter bullshit. Ive analyzed all the majors and Sprint with their 'new' pricing really is average compared to T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G data solutions.

To summarize a lot of information that could be disseminated into a thesis, lets just keep it simple. AT&T has tons of money and a huge infrastructure and really is poised for a BIG leap in 3G coverage and speeds this year. Verizon markets well, but in reality on the DATA side, no so quick. This is due to their legacy Airtouch/Pacific Telesis roots. T-Mobile, give these guys credit. It is the only foreign company in the history of the USA to be granted the spectrum, access and infrastructure to build out the AWS 3G network. And its a good one. Small, but they WILL get there. Right now, T-Mobile is leading the way in value, technology, handsets and customer service. That leaves us with Sprint-Nextel. They couldn't sell the 35 year old TDMA iDen network that Motorola built and maintains (Another company about to go under) So now they are stuck with it. So what are their plans to stop 1.8 MILLION post-paid, profitable customers from leaving every quarter, when they have been working on IEEE 802.16 for three years?

"Well, we are live in Baltimore. Its real. Its coming to Portland in a few months. Then a few others, later this year..." For the uninitiated that means more Port cities except for big ones like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Because they would get crucified once people use this "4G" service and realize they are getting the same speeds from AT&T's 3.6/7.4 HSUPA network. And that release is already covering a Nationwide footprint.

Next post, more on Sprint, their roadmap, devices and all things Google (hint: NONE) and Palm related.
